Oppia is an outstanding example of open-source software built around a meaningful public goal. The platform has been developed for more than a decade and supports interactive lessons that respond to learners instead of only presenting static pages. Its large contributor community, thousands of forks, detailed contributor wiki, public discussions, documentation, issue system, and Apache 2.0 license show a mature and welcoming project. The repository also has extensive automation and an active review process. Its work on free math lessons for learners with limited access gives the technical project a clear real-world purpose.
For a project this large, the main challenge is helping a new contributor find a manageable starting point. The root README explains the mission well, but most setup and contribution information is behind external wiki links. A short local setup summary, supported operating systems, expected resource needs, common setup failures, and a map of the major code areas would make the first visit less overwhelming. A labeled list of beginner-friendly issues and a small example of the development cycle would also help volunteers move from interest to a successful first change.
